Southern California Association of Governments rejects $10.9 million federal grant for E85 ethanol stations
In California, council members of the Southern California Association of Governments rejected an $10.9 million federal grant aimed at subsidizing the cost of constructing 55 E85 ethanol stations, saying that corn ethanol causes more harm than good to the environment in California. Some council members cited that fuel would have to be trucked in from the Midwest, and that the 1000 gallons of water needed to produce a gallon of ethanol made it environmentally unsound. Other council members said that the council’s process for grant applications had not been followed by the Clean Cities Coalition, which had proposed to administer the grant, and that all funds would go to Pearson Fuels. Pearson said that plans to build the 55 E85 stations would be “dead” without the funds.
