Cassava ethanol yields may substantially increase with new varietals in the Philippines

In the Philippines, a partnership between the Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center and Colombia’s Centro International de Agricultura Tropical has developed three new, high-yield cassava varietals for industrial-scale ethanol production. One of the varietals had reported 38.2 metric tonnes per hectare (14.7 tons per acre) with a 26 percent starch content, compared to yields of nine MT per hectare (3.5 tons per acre) with current varietals in the 1997 Philippine plantings used as a benchmark.
