In Washington, Nature has published the sequence and analysis of the soybean, the first legume to be published. The 18-institution research team included the DOE Joint Genome Institute, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, Purdue University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The code gives the scientific community access to a basic genome reference for 20,000 legume species and can gain insights, for example, into the mechanics of nitrogen fixation.

The project was the largest plant project sequencing completed to date at the DOE Joint Genome Institute.
