NWF report says corn expansion threatens wildlife, recommends moratorium on land conversion
In Michigan, graduate students from the University of Michigan prepared a report on the potential impacts of corn crop increases on wildlife in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
The study, which found that several wildlife populations are declining in line with increased corn production, recommended that the Conservation Reserve Program acreage should be increased, prairie and wetland should be protected from land conversion, and cellulosic ethanol should be used in replacing corn ethanol, rather than targeting fossil-based gasoline. The report was released by the National Wildlife Federation.
