In Massachusetts, Joule Biotechnologies revealed to Xconomy that it has selected its pilot plant location, “in the American Southwest”, but Joule said that it could not specifically reveal the location because local government approval of the facility is not expected until later in January.

The company’s pilot is aimed to develop data in support of Joule’s lab findings that it can produce 25,000 gallons of ethanol for $50 per barrel, using a proprietary, genetically engineered microbe that converts sunlight and CO2, and standard nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, into ethanol, without the intermediate step of fermenting biomass.
