Biofuels Approved for Clean Development Mechanism

In Brazil, the foreign ministry’s subsecretary for biofuels and technology told Reuters that the United Nations has approved biofuels for the  Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), a global scheme that promotes investment in developing nations by offering carbon offsets from approved emissions-reducing projects.

CERs, or certified offset credits, can be sold on international carbon exchanges or applied by investors to their own emissions requirements. The UN’s approval of biofuels opens up a new potential international market for biofuels by offering investors not only the returns from the projects, but offset credits that can be monetized.

According to a report in the India Times, “biofuels have been criticised by those who say they offer little more energy beyond that which is used to produce them. But Brazil’s sugar cane-based ethanol is much more efficient than the corn-based variety used by other countries, including the United States.”
